Andrea Wendel
Andrea Lewin Wendel is a multidisciplinary artist working in metal, wood and painting, whose sculptural work makes a statement with unexpected detail and functionality. Purposeful sculpture that makes us rethink the way we look at ordinary things, asking the viewer to look at everyday objects as more.
“In the process of creating furniture, it is more of a feel of the shapes and materials that move together sculpturally. It is an instinctual feel of space and balance. Textures and materials are abstract drawings on horizontal and vertical planes.”
Welding and woodworking allows Andrea the freedom to create the perfect canvas for her meticulous surface treatments. Carved textures and designs are juxtaposed with inlaid materials to create energy. Her hand painted steel pieces are recontexturalized literary quotes, illustrated then layered with spray paint, splatters and scrapes.
The tensions of embracing opposites are instilled in Andrea Wendel’s work through her use of materials and the narrative creating a new language and identity in form and function.
